What is CIRS?

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, also known as CIRS, is a multi-system, multi-symptom illness associated with exposure to biotoxins. There are currently approximately 40 known biotoxins that can cause CIRS, the most common being actinomycetes and mold.

CIRS is an immune mechanism dysfunction that essentially allows a biotoxin to chronically stimulate the innate immune response, causing a cascade of inflammation that leads to dysregulation in multiple systems, including the: Neurological, Endocrine, Respiratory, Cardiovascular, Immune, and Musculoskeletal systems.

Although depression is not an official symptom of CIRS, mood swings are, and in our experience the directions the mood often swings are toward depression, anxiety, and anger. Therefore, in an effort to be more specific about how we think about mood swings in the context of Mold/CIRS, we want to dive a little deeper into some of the most common emotions patients experience when they experience mood swings

Can CIRS be treated?

CIRS was discovered in the mid-1990’s and there have been many different views and approaches to treating it – with mixed success. In late 2019, a path that leads to a 94% cure rate was discovered. The medical approach for that treatment became available for physicians to learn and implement in 2020. This was a game-changer in CIRS treatment because this new approach provided clarity and focus to achieve predictable points of improvement so that patients could fully recover. It is a rigorous program for the clinician, requiring approximately 200 hours of post-doctoral study.
